And now a few words about Mother’s Day…

FINDING OUR INNER EMPRESS

Mother’s Day can be a difficult holiday for so many reasons. If you’re grieving this mother’s day, or feeling alone, or just looking to reframe the way you see the day, The Empress is a beautiful card to consider.

While The Empress certainly represents fertility and the divine feminine, her meaning is not limited to the physical act of giving birth. Rather, she symbolizes nurturing, creativity, and abundance. In her case, giving birth is a metaphor for so many beautiful things. We birth ideas, friendships, art, kindness…and in this sense, we are all mothers.

No matter your relationship to motherhood, or your preferred gender identity, if Sunday will be a tough day for you, please know that you are not alone. You are loved and valued by the universe and the divine feminine, for exactly who you are, right now, this very minute. Unconditionally, and always.

EARTH ENERGY



The Empress strongly connects to the element of earth, which represents nurturing, growth, healing, stability, and connecting to our roots. Most people think of “roots” as ancestral family, and that interpretation is certainly valid. But all of us have roots: things that remind us who we are at our core, what we stand for, and of our strength and resilience.

So, if Mother’s Day might be stressful or painful for you, I urge you to find ways to mother *yourself.*

Journal/Meditation prompt: What have you created, nurtured, or brought to life? Have you nurtured plants or animals? Have you helped others through community outreach or volunteerism? What about personal growth? Do you create art that brings people joy? Do you bake or cook for others? Reflect on all the ways you bring light and “life” into the world, and on how you’d like to continue doing so in the future.

Gardening is birthing beauty into the world, not just for ourselves, but to share with others. Consider planting something, or spending time in a garden or park. Volunteering at a community garden or farmer’s market is another way to nourish, since everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy food.

PLAY! What did you love to do when you were a child? What inspired wonder for you, made you curious, delighted you? Go and do that (safely please)! Bringing yourself joy is one of the greatest gifts you can give to the world.

Create/Write. Write to your past or inner child, write to your future self, talk to them. Tell them what is difficult, but also remind them how to find joy. Remind yourself of your resilience. Draw it, sculpt it, dance it out. In times when you aren’t receiving support from others, remember: you have the ability to comfort and nourish yourself, even when it’s hard to summon.


However you choose to spend Mother’s Day, honor yourself. May you feel safe, hopeful, and loved…because you are!
